League rules

Age and weight by division

Every Bluefins player has to meet the OCYFL limits for their division. These are set and regularly reviewed by the league for player safety, and weighing in is a league requirement before every single game.

  • Mites

    Grades 2 / 3 / 4

    Week 1 limit
    119 lbs
    Season maximum
    128 lbs
    Equipment included
    8 lbs

    Age

No Mite player may reach the age of ten before July 1st, and must reach the age of seven by September 1st.

    Over the limit

A player over 128 lbs may opt to play as a Pee Wee, with roster adjustments.

  • Pee Wees

    Grades 5 / 6

    Week 1 limit
    144 lbs
    Season maximum
    153 lbs
    Equipment included
    8 lbs

    Age

No Pee Wee player may reach the age of twelve before July 1st.

    Over the limit

A player over 153 lbs may opt to play as a Midget, with roster adjustments.

  • Midgets

    Grades 7 / 8

    Week 1 limit
    181 lbs
    Season maximum
    195 lbs
    Equipment included
    10 lbs

    Age

No Midget player may reach the age of fourteen before June 1st of the current year, and no player in the ninth grade may play in the league regardless of age. A player repeating eighth grade needs an approved waiver for a second eighth-grade season.

    Over the limit

A player within 10 lbs of the limit stays on the roster and works toward eligibility. A player over 205 lbs also stays on the roster and works toward meeting the game-day weigh-in as the season progresses.

How it works

Two numbers, not one

The limit rises by one pound every week of the season, so week one is the tightest it gets and a player slightly over in September may well be inside the limit by October.

Separately, the OCYFL bylaws set a maximum weight at the official weigh-in for each division. Both figures are in the table above, and both already include the equipment allowance — that is the weight the league assumes for pads and a helmet, not an extra allowance on top.

A note on making weight

Players are expected to arrive at practices and games properly fed and hydrated — never hungry or thirsty in order to make a weight. If your child's weight is becoming a concern for game participation, talk to a coach or the board early so it can be handled sensibly and healthily.
